A
Taxonomy of Catches
| Floater
Catches
- There are a million different ways to twist and turn
and hold the stick to catch a descending Aerobie. Extra points to
you and to the thrower if you manage to simply pick and hold a position
and let the Aerobie descend on to your stick while you stay motionless.

Extra
points for reversing direction and over the shoulder catches. Extra
points for catching with stick behind your back. Extra points for
grace and execution. No extra points for avoiding a collision with
the telephone pole: that is its own reward. |
| Direct
Frontal Catches
- The most challenging and rewarding catches are those in
which (right) the Aerobie comes straight and flat toward you presenting
not a circular target but a relatively thin oval, or no hole at
all. Ten points for spear catching it from beneath. |

But,
with practice (left) you can spear catch it from above for
thirty points. Increase your motivation by imagining it is a razor
sharp Chakram that you must catch with your sword lest it impale
the King or Queen for whom you do battle. |
| Diving
Catches
- Aerobies at the distant edge of your reach require
heroic dives, even with a stick in your hand. As long as the ring
ends up on the stick, you get 10 points, with extra points for hitting
the ground really hard, rolling and coming up running, all while
not impaling yourself. Needless to say, impaling yourself is its
own punishment, but no points are subtracted. |

Leaping
Catches
- These require an intuitive coordination
of three different trajectories: the Aerobie's, your body's, and
the Aerostick's. Nothing is required to make spectacular, world
changing, leaping catches except your extreme skill. But when
you make one, you can hear the cosmic point-o-meter climb.

Throw
Stops - If an Aerobie is above or beyond
your reach and you manage to throw your stick to stop its progress you
have done a certifiable GREAT THING (TM). The crowds should cheer, but
if for some reason they do not, you may do so on their behalf. I usually
manage a Throw Stop about once in an afternoon. But if you ALSO actually
catch the Aerobie in your hands after stopping it with a thrown stick,
you double your entire point score for the afternoon.
Hat Tricks
- If you manage to throw your stick and IMPALE the Aerobie (in a situation
in which it would otherwise be missed altogether) then everyone has
to bow down to you and buy you expensive presents. This is a sign of
great prowess and worshipfulness on your part. In addition, if the ring
lands on the ground with the stick still inside it, you have achieved
eternal life. I have achieved this only a few times.
Head Hits
- If you throw your stick into the air to make a Throw Stop or a Hat
Trick and the stick lands on your head, you are an official idiot. You
will know this immediately and intuitively from the pain you feel. I
have achieved this status on a few occasions. On the other hand, if
you don't take risks, you'll never know eternal life.
The
"points" above are strictly a figure of speech. I can't imagine
actually keeping score.
